Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: How do I measure my horse?
A: If your horse stands quietly, you can measure it by yourself; if not, you may wish to ask for someone's help to perform the following. Using a tape measure, start at the center of the horse's chest, proceeding parallel to the ground, measure around the widest part of the shoulder all the way to the CENTER of the tail. Round up to the nearest even number (i.e. if the horse measures a 79 it is an 80) A cloth tape measure similar to those used by tailors are preferable to metal tape measures since they are quiet and conform to the curves of the horse better.  back to top

  • Q: How do I measure my dog?
A: If your dog stands quietly, you can measure it by yourself; if not, you may wish to ask for someone's help to perform the following: Using a tape measure, start at the base of the dogs neck and measure to the base of the tail. You also want to measure around the dog's neck like a collar. The last measurement you will need is his girth measurement. • Q: My horse has a large conformation, will Saratoga Horseworks, Ltd. horse clothing fit it well?
A: Yes. Our standard pattern fits Thoroughbreds, Arabians, and horses of similar conformations very well. For larger breeds, Warm bloods, & some Quarter horses we offer a pattern modification called a "Warm Blood Cut" that allows for a wider chest and a deeper drop. A Warm Blood Cut can be ordered as an option on most of our horse clothing.  back to top

  • Q: My horse wears another company's blanket in a size 78 will your size 78 fit the same?
A: Probably not. Most manufacturers of horse clothing have patterns that are unique to that manufacturer. Subsequently, they all have a unique fit. Whether your current blanket fits well or poorly, it is wise to measure your horse to determine what size your horse is.  back to top

  • Q: I live in the Northeast and am concerned about the outbreak of West Nile Virus in this area. Will any of your products help protect my horse form this potentially fatal illness?
A: Yes, but this is a very difficult situation that effects all living creatures in the North Eastern USA and which is spreading farther south and west every year. West Nile Virus in itself is not fatal but it can progress into Encephalitis, which can kill an infected animal or human. The best treatment is always prevention! In this case, prevention means protecting your horse from mosquito bites (a difficult proposition at best). Steps should be taken to reduce the amount of standing water in your area in which mosquitos can breed. Secondly, the use of a good quality insect repellent on your horse and in the barn combined with the use of Summer Turnout Sheets will reduce the potential exposure to insect bites. We recommend our Oasis or Oasis Plus Summer Turnout for maximum protection from biting insects and also harmful sun exposure.  back to top
